We are Birgit & Michael, a German couple wanting to have kids (i. e. together). So we searched the net for any information about surrogacy, well knowing that it is not legal in Germany. Having heard that it can be done in Britain, we found Nikki & Bobby´s website and we were overwhelmed by the dedication and the emotion that had been put into it. Won´t forget the first e-mail contact with Bobby, we had asked him what we could possibly do to start the surrogacy process and the answer was: "You have to go abroad. Far abroad." Of course, he was speaking of Mother India. As I -Michael- have a friend who years ago spent a couple of years in India, I immediately had sort of an affinity to the country, or rather to the thought of starting our adventure there. We have seen many big cities all around the world, but still, we were a little insecure of what would be waiting for us going to Mumbai, including the fear of malaria, typhoid or cholera. Plus a lot of curiosity, as we are very open for foreign cultures, mentalities and people. We had decided to go to India without any jabs together with Bobby, he had arranged everything perfectly well, including food, hotels, the clinic, rural life, "shopping", religion, even a selfmade map of where to find what, simply amazing!
As we had never been to India before, we had certain pictures in our heads and plans of what we´d be getting up to once arrived. Bobby was waiting for us at the airport (it was after one o´clock in the morning!) and took us all to the hotel with a hired car plus driver! (For anyone who hasn´t had the privilege to have experienced India: If a foreigner rents a car there from Avis or any company it comes with a driver because driving in India is different from driving outside India, and we quickly learned why....image ). Early next morn, the driver took us to the clinic and it was so personal, Rotunda Center for Human Reproduction. It is very clean and all that but does not make a sterile and cold impression, everyone was very friendly. (It was definitely good Bobby was there as he knew the people in charge...). After the appointment at the clinic we all went to the City of Poona (Pune), approx 160kms south-east of Mumbai. There we were staying for four nights befor going back to Bombay for another clinic appointment. Poona overwhelmed us completely, entirely, it was so great to make this experience, out of this world! The people are all so friendly there, and they kind of shake their heads when saying yes (a thing we´ve had to learn in order to communicate properly). The atmosphere was so peaceful, you get the feeling you can trust the people. The food was terrific, the people are so proud of this beautiful country. An Indian boy smiled at us outside the railway station saying "Welcome to India". Bobby guided us through all the streets and places, showing us where to buy what for our baby, whenever he/she arrives, and we learned a lot about the Sikh faith, the religion that actually is for the people. We went to the temple very often and there was peace and quiet in the center of all the traffic and noise and hassle of a 3,5-million-city. Even free food every night you can get there and it tastes so authentic. There were cows in the middle of the market or on the streets and goats and wild dogs. We could keep raving away about the place and the atmosphere and the country and the people, but I´ll say more another time. These people have such a fine dignity in midst their poverty, which strikes at every corner. One of these women will be the genetic mother of our child, if everything goes its way.... We are just asking destiny, Mother India and the Gods and gurus for help, for Bobby, Nikki and ourselves. We´ll be back!
